Privacy-First Text Expansion: Why It Matters
Your snippets contain sensitive data. Here's why we built TypeSnap to never see it.
Think about what’s in your text snippets.
- Email templates with client names
- Your home address
- Code snippets with API patterns
- Contract boilerplate with legal terms
- Support responses referencing internal processes
Now ask yourself: should a text expansion company have access to all of that?
The Cloud Problem
Most text expanders sync through their own servers. TextExpander, for instance, requires an account and stores your snippets on their infrastructure.
That means:
- They can see your data - Even if encrypted, they hold the keys
- Your data is a target - Breaches happen to the best companies
- They can be compelled to share - Subpoenas happen
- You’re trusting their security - Forever, as long as you use their service
Our Approach: No Servers, No Access
TypeSnap stores your snippets locally, in standard JSON files on your Mac. We have:
- No servers - We literally cannot receive your data
- No accounts - Nothing to breach, nothing to hack
- No analytics - We don’t track what you type or when
- No network access - The app doesn’t connect to the internet (except optional iCloud)
If you choose to sync, you use your iCloud storage. We never see it.
“But What If You Get Hacked?”
We can’t be hacked for your data because we don’t have it. There’s nothing to steal.
Your snippets live on your Mac. Your backup strategy is yours to control. Your data is yours.
Privacy Isn’t Just Ideology
This isn’t just philosophy -it’s practical:
- Simpler architecture - No servers to maintain means fewer moving parts
- Lower costs - No infrastructure costs to pass on to you
- Faster expansion - No network latency, ever
- Offline works - No internet required to use your snippets
The Trade-Off
Yes, this means no cross-device sync out of the box. If you need your snippets on multiple Macs, you’ll need to enable iCloud sync.
We think that’s a reasonable trade-off for complete data sovereignty.
Your Snippets, Your Mac, Your Privacy
That’s not just our tagline -it’s our architecture.
